The Celestial Railroad

Liberal theology, easy-believism, and a Christianity with no cross are not new, although they went by other names in the mid-1800’s when this allegory was written. Nathaniel Hawthorne looked at the Christianity of the mid-1800s and found it wanting. He wrote this allegory, using Pilgrim’s Progress as a basis, showing a man setting out for the Celestial City as Christian of old did. However, Hawthorne’s pilgrim takes the new and improved route, traveling on the Celestial Railroad.
